World Premiere Of A Home Called 'Wander' For Solo Viola
Friday, May 22nd 2020 marked the world premiere of my composition, A Home Called 'Wander' for solo viola. This piece was performed by Ashleigh Gordon, Artistic and Executive Director of Castle of Our Skins. Holding a"desire to foster cultural curiosity, Castle of our Skins is a concert and educational series dedicated to celebrating Black artistry through music."
This piece was commissioned as part of Castle of Our Skins Black Composer Miniature Challenge.
My composition, A Home Called 'Wander' for solo viola, was inspired by the following words of Maya Angelou:
“ You only are free when you realize you belong no place -- you belong every place -- no place at all.”
The work explores the concept of home as a place of Wandering, but also a place where wholeness and peace can be experienced.
I was so honoured to take part in this project and to bring a small moment of beauty to our lives through music.
